From the Director

I have spent my life watching and performing this dance in many regions of the world and realized when I returned to the United States that there was a great misconception in this country of the art form. It is not "glits and tits" but an intricate and difficult art to master. Yes, it is extremely sensuous. It is also beautiful to watch, and can be breathtaking when the isolation work is well done. But the dance is sadly misrepresented here and often overlooked. My objective for this video was to expose the viewer to some of the rich and multifaceted layers that make up Middle Eastern dance today. I wanted to show where some of its origins came from and how much it has influenced the other dance forms that evolved around it. Belly dancing is a joy to watch and even more fun to do, so let the music grab you and join these lovely ladies on the screen. Discover why this art form is so addictive to those who do it.

We would like to thank the owner of The Casablanca Restaurant, Rafi Labrini, for allowing us to film in what has to be the Washington, DC area's best Middle Eastern nightclub. We were fortunate that most of the area's finest dancers agreed to participate along with Philadelphia's own Habiba and Colorado's Turkish expert, Eva Cernik. Shooting took place during several evening performances, dubbed "Parties with Arty," given after workshops held in Studio Artemis for guest instructors. The Washington Area has a flourishing Middle Eastern Dance Association (WAMEDA) which was instrumental in making the performances enormously successful. Without their help and that of Studio Artemis, this video could never have been made.

Product Description

The origins of Middle Eastern dance (belly dance) have been lost in the dawn of mankind. Was it religious, seductive, instructive or all three? The movements and rhythms that have filtered down through the ages give testimony to a way of life rich in music and dance tradition; traditions that have influenced or have been borrowed from the dances of neighboring cultures. Join us for this live performance, filmed at the Casablanca Restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia, to discover one of the oldest dance forms in the world. Travel through time and cultures with some of the most gifted dancers and teachers in the United States as they perform pieces from Turkey, Egypt, Spain and even India. If you love belly dancing or if you're just curious about this mysterious and sensuous art form, this cassette is a must for you.
